Baobab Trust hosts Holistic Organic Farm Field Day
FARMERS AND VISITORS LEARNED HOW FISH CULTURE
AND VEGETABLE IRRIGATION CAN ALSO BE COMBINED
Coastweek - - Baobab Trust and the Ministry of Agriculture held an open day on the Mtopanga training farm on Wednesday 29th November 2006 was attended by 250 farmers and visitors from as far as Makindu and Mtito Andei.
The principles of a holistic approach in organic farming were demonstrated and the use of natural techniques were explained.
Farmers and visitors learnt how muddy water can be cleaned and sterilized using sun and plant seeds, while fish culture and vegetable irrigation can be combined.
A small-scale feed-lot biogas unit and various medicinal plants cultures were also part of the demonstration.
Most farmers were impressed with the new modern biogas installed in the farm house as well as the fish ponds and fish tanks.
Visitors enjoyed a cup of lemon grass tea cooked on biogas and other energy saving jikos.
The Executive Officer from the Ministry of Agriculture was the guest of honour on this day.
