WATAMU TO HOST SEMINAR ON 'SNAKEBITE' TREATMENT

Seminar to give clear and simple instructions in all cases of snakebites.
A seminar on the treatment of snakebite is being organized at Watamu on Kenya's north coast ,on the 11th of November.
The seminar will focus on the new guidelines for snakebite treatment that were recently announced by the World Health Organization, (WHO).
The seminar will be a great opportunity for medical, health and clinic staff as well as safari and tour guides to understand the procedures involved in treating snakebite, especially Kenya.
Speakers at the seminar will include Dr. R. Blaylock, for SAVP, South Africa; Dr M. Chisale, of WHO, Brazzaville; Dr.s Omar, Odthiambo and Dr Erulu, of Kenya and Prof. D. Warrell, of Oxford, England.
BioKen Snake Farm at Watamu is co-ordinating the seminar, the Director of Bi Ken, Royjan Taylor said it was vital that medical staff working in clinics and hospitals across Kenya have a good understanding of how to treat snakebite.
"There are many myths surrounding snakes and the treatment of snake bite, especially in Africa", said Mr Taylor.
"There are many harmless, non venous snakes in Kenya, however for the poisonous snakes it is vital that medical workers know what to do and quickly, when treating snakebite.
"The seminar will bring together many of the world's leading experts on snakes and the seminar will give clear and simple instructions on what to do in all cases of snakebite and we will highlight snakes that are common in Kenya".
