Good point! I don't think so. He is doing the research as part of his thesis and is partly sponsored by AWF and the private sector. He is a 1 man show (Former disgruntled Park Warden) with tremendous respect amongst the local communities in the Northern part of Tanzania. What he is doing is so unbelievably important and makes use of existing legislation to achieve important goals in wildlife ocnservation. Existing legislation states that all villages need to have a Land Use Plan (LUP) for the land under their custody (village land). Just like a city will have a City Use Plan that determines what acreage is residential, commercial, industrial, green belt, etc. Through education, he is "empowering" the local communities to decide which part of their land and how much needs to be set aside for wildlife corridors where there is to be no settlement, no agricultural activities or any other activity which interfers with wildlife movement. Once this decision is reached, it is llegalised and gazetted and remains part of law. the best part is that it won't be challenged because the communities were part of the decision making process! At least a couple of Bomas have been successfully relocated by Alfred's work in important migratory corridors between Amboseli ecosystem and west kilimanjaro.
