By all means, do go out and enjoy a nice dinner.

I personally would also prefer a simple taxi but even a hotel car is fine. They usually have the hotel name in big letters on it. In either case you are not the target group.

Maybe I would avoid a limo-service

Do not worry too much - I think any taxi taken from the hotel is fine.
Naturally if travelling at night, just lock the doors in the back -
Do not worry and do not let it spoil your good time.

Have a good dinner - try some Indian food as well - if you like it.

True, I don't usually go out in Nairobi in the evening.

However, most of these killing have been against matatu drivers and touts, who are refusing to pay the Mungiki's "protection rate" so I would definitely stay away from that public transportation.

If you have used Kenatco before, drop them an email, let them know of your concern and find out if they think it would be safe for you to go out in the evening. I know some people here in the U.S. have actually cancelled their Kenya trips because of this fear. I wouldn't go that far, but I will be careful.

It takes nature millions of years to evolve a new species. It takes only minutes to eradicate one from the wild forever.
