I have been in such a situation with my ex business partner. She has a phobia for pigeons. She would jump around and refuse to go near any pigeon within 20 meters. It was really crazy. Luckily I do not have such a situation but can understand what you may feel.

We fully understand that you are scared of spiders, Pippa, but we can not think of any dangerous spiders. Wish we could in order to provide you with a reason for your phobia. 
Maybe you can practice with little plastic ones at home? Just put them in all kinds of drawers etc. Once you get used to them, get fake ones that move and slowly slowly you could get there
