As more and more news are coming in every day on the Rift Valley Fever and most of us know little about it, I have collected details from CDC (Centers of Disease Control and Prevention) and produced a fact sheet. You can either follow this link or simply take a look at our topic Health Precautions found in the left menu under Useful Information.

Of course we will keep you updated on news about any further cases as well as actions taken in the News section.

Carsten:

Thank you for posting this link. It is crucial that travelers follow strict mosquito protection while in Kenya during this outbreak.

The only thing about the CDC article that I would question is the 1% death rate. From the news coming out of Kenya, it seems very much higher than that. I have seen a report of only 1 or 2 people being discharged from hospitals after recovery. Most have died. And, many people are not even making it to a hospital before death.

Take precautions!

i cannot help it but it sounds as a kind of EBOLA - the symtoms are very similar! if it is a subspecies of EBOLA we are all facing a new era regarding diseases!

No irma, don´t panic. Ebola, and all those fevers like Rift Valley, Marburg etc are all very nasty and fast killing viral diseases, but they have been existing for many years. Rift Valley Fever is at least 100 years old and has been around ever since. Usually during extreme rains because it requires moskitos to spread. Since we have this massive rain at the moment, it is no surprise the RVF pitches up, too.

The dangerous thing is, that it can also be passed on through infected meat and since poor farmers from those regions can not count on compensation for destroying their meat, they will try to sell it anyhow - especially now during the festive season.

Once again humans will pay their price for greediness, but unfortunately it will once again be the innocent.

I do admit, though, that the death rate of 1 % seems too low. I guess this is based on previous outbreaks.
