It was a chance encounter between a glamorous Parisian and a wildlife conservationist from South Africa. Meeting in a London taxi queue — the rest, as they say is history or, in this case, the magnificent Thula Thula Private Game Reserve, where Lawrence and Francoise Anthony have created a sanctuary for wildlife and guests.
Thula Thula, which aptly means \'peace and tranquility\' in Zulu, is steeped in history. Once the hunting grounds of the mighty Zulu Warrior, King Shaka, the reserve abounds with wildlife including a breeding herd of elephant, the first to roam the land in over a century.
Rediscover nature in great style and true to the African safari camp of a past era at Thula Thula’s luxury Tented Camp, where the peaceful essence of the African bush can be heard and felt. Exclusivity is assured with only eight luxury tents, all with private viewing decks, mosquito nets, fans and luxurious en-suite bathrooms complete with Victorian baths.
The two family tents offer space, luxury and comfort for parents and children and the generous en-suite bathrooms have both an indoor and outdoor shower. View wildlife whilst sipping a cocktail from the swimming pool bar or relax in your hammock overlooking the Enseleni river. A buffet lunch is served around the outside thatched bar or by the swimming pool. Dine under the stars in the boma for a traditional South African braai or a potjie where you will share stories of the day\'s game viewing or the legends of the bush with your hosts, our dedicated rangers and trackers.
World-famous for his 2003 daring and remarkable rescue of the zoo animals in war-stricken Baghdad, Lawrence’s adventures are scripted in his first book “Babylon’s Ark” and a motion picture which will portray his heroic tale, is due to begin filming in early 2011.
A passionate conservationist and environmentalist, Lawrence has also made headlines with his recent Northern White Rhinoceros protection efforts in Uganda. One of his most acclaimed achievements however, has been on home turf in Zululand, South Africa — Lawrence’s unique ability to rehabilitate a herd of seven rogue African Elephants, has earned him the reputation of ‘the elephant whisperer’.
His unique relationship with Nana, matriarch of the band of elephant, and her herd remains one of the drawcards that compels tourists and locals to visit Thula Thula. Lawrence’s second book, “The Elephant Whisperer” explores this extraordinary relationship and recounts the moving tale of his challenge to save an elephant herd from certain execution.
Co-owner and chef, Francoise Anthony is every bit as passionate about game and wildlife as she is about life itself. Well revered as one of Zululand’s foremost gourmet destinations, French- trained Francoise entertains with a gastronomic fusion of exotic Franco African flavours, created with passion and flair.
Choose from a selection of seafood, venison and vegetarian dishes — Seafood Bouillabaise Creole, Oxtail Bourguignon with garlic crushed potato, Three Cheese and Pesto feuillete on tomato compote, Venison terrine with Marula jelly, fillet of Impala served on sweet potato cake with red wine and bacon sauce — all guaranteed to delight and satisfy even the most discerning gourmet.
An easy two hour drive from Durban and approximately five hours from Johannesburg situated in a malaria free area, Thula Thula is the ultimate destination to experience a true taste of Africa. (Posters note: This is the conservationist who rescued the Tuli elephants and then went to the
Baghdad Zoo and saved many of the animals there also. His books, The Elephant Whisperer and
Babylon Ark are both well worth reading)
