Wow! Thanks for posting Carsten. If this indeed true one would think there would no NO sea life at all in the area, not just a decline due to overfishing. One would think they would also find deformed fish, coral etc.

Too bad that the political climate is such that reputable organzations can't safely get in to the area to assess the situation better. Until that is done and proof gotten, most likely nothing will be done.

I have no doubt that America and Europe dump their toxic rubbish in Somalia. It went wrong in Ivory Coast and we have an article from 2006 ([URL=http://www.bushdrums.com/news/index.php?shownews=523]Someone Else's Problem[/URL]) on Bushdrums that explains quite a few problems with toxic waste "disposal" - in other words, dump - in Africa.

The oceans can obviously cope with more than we expected, just like the air, but that doesn't mean it is not happening.

I find the attitude of these companies that dump toxic waste in Africa racist and selfish. Imagine an African Country dumping her toxic waste on the Costa Brava or Miami Beach!

This kind of waste should be controlled at the harbour of DEPARTURE. One could simply not allow a ship to depart for Somalia with such waste on board. Ships have GPS, so one could trace them via satellite.

If the situation in Somalia is under control, a new country will be found that has political instability and the story will go on. One has to stop it at the beginning and in those places where one CAN control it. But I wonder if anyone is really interested in stopping it. Where do we put our waste instead? In our own backyard?
