I was reading this article with good interest this morning and pity to get this news from Jan.... sad. I was hoping that we would have a little story from a 4 month old little elephant that would be brought up over the months and we could see its progression.

A real pity as the little elephants are quite strong. When I was living in Zaire in the early 80’s - now Rep. of Congo - we lived in the rainforest for a few years and my dad found a little 3 month old pigmy elephant who was burnt on its legs due to forest fire. The elephant had no mother and we took him in. He became a large elephant but still a rain forest pigmy.

My mum used to get annoyed with me and my brother as we used to go out and get completely muddy with the elephant.

Unfortunately war broke out…. We had to leave the elephant in the care of the local forest department and never heard back from anyone over the years!

Re cattle movement – big numbers you are talking about wondering the national parks. However you will be surprised how far the cattle herdsman are able to walk in weeks with cattle. A few hundred kilometres is not too much for them to slowly walk through over time. This type of movement is also done in Australia from one ranch to the other.
