even kws on their game walks might run into game which is by far not predictable!
we cannot predict our very own cat or dog - how can one predict the reaction of a wild animal?
for example in botswana they take you for game walks to chief's island (okavango delta/moremi reserve) which is quite adrenalin driven exercise: so we get off the boat which took us from camp to chief's island and............walk and see lion droppings, elephant droppings, buffalo droppings.........and we walk single file as requested and OOPS all of a sudden when we passed dense bush area we heard this cracking......... there were elephants we almost ran into the huge masses.........stood still immediately and retraced slowly but surely .........our guide had nothing to give a warning except his voice.........(guides in NP are not allowed to carry weappons due to botswana law!)
we got back to the boat and when we were talking about the encounter there were 2 lionesses walking the water's edge a mere 50 m where we just embarked the boat after the walk
a second incident was in greater krueger NP where we were after white rhinos which we found also after passing dense bush area in the open. 2 of them were munching but all of a suddun the stopped eating, lifted their heads and were looking into our direction. of course we were wlking because we wanted to see something.but when you are that cloese to these powerful animals you immediatly realise your adrenalin is pumping up to your fingertips and lift is pretty vulnerable and depending on these creatures moods.....
despite never being charged on foot i doubt the whole game walking idea is a good one. live and death might be a matter of seconds. and quite frankly i don't want to become a reason for enhancing the safety measures!

if a lion/tiger develops an appetit for human flesh is another question.............
as i don't differenciate between animals and human beings (which are also animals if not the worse) i would say it might be killed if it's for certain that one particular animal has become a man-eater. but i oppose the killing of lions or tigers at random - which did george adamson when he was looking for a lioness which killed but did not eat its prey - when he killed elsa's and her siblings mother!

In the scenario you depicted in your last paragraph, i can say that generally, nothing is done about it because the wildlife is not in regular contact with human populations. Hunting areas often do not allow human settlement within so there is less of a need to settle the issue

Personally, with species that are known to take a liking to human flesh after tasting, I would only take action if it became a repeat offender. However, this will leave a lot of bitterness amongst the afflicted locals which may take action inot their own hands. At the end of the day this might be worse! No easy answers to human-wildlife conflict, hey?

a 37 old woman which was obviously very fond of cheetahs - as i am [Zwinkern] - got herself they keys from a cupboard in the zoo's cafeteria for the enclosure after the zoo closed (big questioning starts here!) and opend two gates in order to reach the animals. one of the animals was adopted by that woman. the enclosure houses two cheetahs. and when the owner of the zoo made his evening walk he found that woman lying on the ground "terribly lacerated" by one of the cheetahs! the animals remain unharmed because the assasin cannot be pinpointed!

I would definately NOT kill the animal on the first incident. Provided it is proven that this specific animal deliberately hunts humans repetedly we can discuss it. Otherwise I see it simply as an eye to eye revenge and I do not see any point in this. As mentioned in previous posts, usually the tourists are to be blamed for wondering about carelessly.

I dion't know enough about the subject other than what I have heard repeated by others (some of whom i respect as knowleadgable on the subject). I understand that one of the reasons why authorities seek to destroy an animal that has killed a human (I'm not referring to tourists alone here as most of you who have posted seem to do) is the fact that that particular individual very often looses all fear of humans after such an attack and thereby becomes more prone to doing it again, at times unprovoked.

I agree with Bwanamich that if an incident happens and the "local authorities" do not act and the situation is left in the hands of the locals it will become a lot worse.
