Wildlife Corridors - Kenya & Tanzania

Good point! I don't think so. He is doing the research as part of his thesis and is partly sponsored by AWF and the private sector. He is a 1 man show (Former disgruntled Park Warden) with tremendous respect amongst the local communities in the Northern part of Tanzania. What he is doing is so unbelievably important and makes use of existing legislation to achieve important goals in wildlife ocnservation. Existing legislation states that all villages need to have a Land Use Plan (LUP) for the land under their custody (village land). Just like a city will have a City Use Plan that determines what acreage is residential, commercial, industrial, green belt, etc. Through education, he is "empowering" the local communities to decide which part of their land and how much needs to be set aside for wildlife corridors where there is to be no settlement, no agricultural activities or any other activity which interfers with wildlife movement. Once this decision is reached, it is llegalised and gazetted and remains part of law. the best part is that it won't be challenged because the communities were part of the decision making process! At least a couple of Bomas have been successfully relocated by Alfred's work in important migratory corridors between Amboseli ecosystem and west kilimanjaro.

His email is akikoti(at)yahoo(dot)com

If you right him, tell him Michel Allard from TGT gave you his email. He travels alot to the bush so may not reply to emails quickly.

Sorry for ´messing around´in your post, but e-mail addresses written fully in posts can also be read by computers which then misuse them for spam mails. The last thing I want is Alfreds e-mail address being misused due to our discussion. Thank you for your understanding....

Bwanamich -

Does Alfred work out from the AWF Nairobi as well? I met quite a few poeple there in meetings and we may have crossed paths as I was brought in to consult with and on behalf of the private sector. Our main topic was Kimana and Ambo.

He may I'm not sure. this was the first time I met Alfred and worked with him. I believe he did say he was given Honorary warden status by KWS so that he could cross over the borders during his corridor research and he did state that KWS have asked him for advice on how he is tackling this corridor issue with regards legislation, etc.

Nico, a very short sighted thought crossed my mind last night but I might as well run it past you.

If farms are blocking the migration paths it means that if they lift their fences wildlife will literally walk right through their back yard. A new "fashion" that is booming in Africa are the so called fly camps. They are mobil, temporary camps that are sometimes erected for as little as one night and follow migration paths with individual travellers. We have some good contacts to such venues on bushdrums. If we could get a farmer to make a deal with some of those venues to lift his fences and rent his land to those venues he would receive money that will easily cover the damage made by the wildlife and surely end up with a couple of extra bugs.

Since these fly camps are not permanent, he could still use the land outside the migration period. I am sure not all work would be wasted by wildlife, leaving him with some harvest.

What do you think?

This is a great point and is what we are trying to suggest - however to make it more clear, it is farmers who have placed farms on wildlife corridors that were always corridors and have become farms in the last few years only. These farms are Masai owned and rented mainly to other tribes who grow onions and tomatoes; we are trying to make a deal with group ranches and the private sector with ideas on how the Masai can still get an income and also lift the fences to allow the corridors to open.
I should have a better idea of what is happening after Wednesday the 13th December 2006 - once I have spoken to the UN - FOA team.

Does anyone know anything about this corridor project by the African Conservation Centre led by Ken Mwathe, focusing on the area between the Mara and Amboseli? There seem to be some really good news.
