Cutting Edge

Publication Date: 3/27/2008
President Kibaki and Mr Raila Odinga may have won praise for bringing the country back from the brink of disaster, but their decision to convene a donor conference to ask for Sh31 billion aid is not good, says Domi Gathuru. “With due respect to both, those funds are from taxpayers in Europe and America. Why should they foot the bill to rebuild what Kenyans themselves destroyed? Let’s revive harambee and raise the money ourselves. This way, we will be more responsible next time we disagree with one another.”

Too easy to create problems and then ask for more foreign aid when they both did nothing at the beginning to call for peace while thousands of Kenyans werte without homes, beaten, hospitalised or killed.

Nico:

The thing I remember most during the clashes is President Kibaki and Martha Karua telling the world to keep their noses out of Kenya's business - they could afford to take care of their own people. Now they are asking for 31 billion. Perhaps the world should just say, you didn't want our help and said you could financially care for your own people, so now we are not offering any help except to an organization such as Red Cross (who will help the people without lining their own pockets).

If you read The Nation tonight you will see that the Kibaki-Odinga power sharing has still not been worked out. If they don't do something quickly, people might uprise again. So very sad for Kenya.

Correct - I have also seen on the BBC this morning that the Kenyan Government has sold around 370 Million worth of their shares of Kenya's largest Telecom company called Safaricom. (Biggest float of shares on the Kenyan stock market in history) What will the Kenyan government do with the profits.......????????
