Self Drive Mapping

I have yet to find any good maps of national parks showing tracks, water holes & the such.
The only ones I have seen were of the parks in Tanzania but were very out of date, although helpful most of the tracks were missing from them.

I know a number of visitors who book guided safaris who like to record their tracks & carry GPS!
I would assume every self driver carries a GPS but without good maps of National Park trails & tracks it is still easy to get lost!

Although your GPS tells you the direction of your camp you have no way to know at a junction which track to take & there may be many tracks!
To follow your GPS footprint back to the camp may take you on along journey in a big loop as you back track your journey.
Even the track that leads in the direction of your camp may not be the best!
It may end in a gully, flood out or take you in a long circle back to where you are!

I know of nothing that would help except perhaps one! Google Earth!

We are covering a lot of new areas with our next trip, even areas I've been before I know less than 1% of it!
Over the next couple of months I intend to mark Google Earth with way points & direct routes between destinations & then print off a series of pictures that cover the areas we will be visiting.
I will also mark each track junction with the coordinates so if a problem I can check GPS coordinates against Google Earth to ensure I'm at the correct location & then follow each track to it's destination to find the one best for me.
I hope to thus avoid a lot of back tracking! Getting lost! & missing important water holes that are just of the main routes.

Has anyone tried this?
Or know of a better way?
Perhaps there is something already available for GPS?

Your ideas please.

Kipper: Don't know if you've checked it out but Garmin had a detailed map of Africa for GPS which
includes Botswana. See: http://www.travelbygps.com/z_links/tracks4africa_dot_co.php?gclid=CMv5sIuixqECFV195Qod9hR-_A

I've looked at the Garmin site but never found this & still can't find it on the UK site!

Thanks, I will look into it for sure as I can buy a download.

This guy talks of another map that might do.

I have now researched this much more Jan & it looks ideal
But
I only have the entry level Garmin 60 so it would mean I would have to upgrade my GPS.
I'd hate to payout $500+ for a new GPS as well as $90 for the maps only to find the maps & tracks were not as good as hoped.

Quote Garmin

These maps only cover places that are relevant to travelers and auto-routing is intended to provide the safest route.

As we intend to go even further of the beaten track this time I would like to see the information on the maps before I commit to a considerable expense.

But thanks ever so much Jan, yet again you came up trumps!... It's just me, a skinflint!

Simba - you once showed me some maps etc ... comment on Kippers question? Any idea?
If Simba does not react send him a PM Kipper as he is into such things.
Also his kid brother must be using some kind of navigation map to get him around Africa for a year in their car....? Ebu Simba - lette story yako!
