These children's parents have enlisted in a program where their 100 acres will remain unfenced, no subdivisions no land sales, no retaliatory killings of wildlife in event of predation, in return for $4/acre! It generates the little income that allows these kids to go to school. For now these payments allow the Maasai to retain their pastoral way of life, but in the medium and long term it will not compete with value of the land for development, quarrying or many other land uses. The Chairman of the Mombasa and Coast Tourist Association, Mohamed Hersi, has made sweeping accusations against a reported crackdown by Kenya's Transport Licensing Board’s (TLB) personnel engaged in road blocks and vehicle checks in the area around Voi, a popular crossroad from Mombasa into Tsavo East National Park, the Taita/Taveta area, and Tsavo West.

Thirty elephant tusks of undetermined value were impounded at the port of Mombasa en route Hong Kong on Wednesday evening.

Poaching for ivory and rhino horn is on the increase throughout Africa and the lenient punishment for poachers has failed to stop them. In Kenya, many elephants and rhinos have been killed by repeat poachers, often within weeks of their arrest and paying the meager fines that are defined by the law.

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) will move about 50 elephants from Narok North to the world famous Maasai Mara National Reserve, about 80 km southwest of Nairobi to mitigate escalating human wildlife conflict in the area, said a statement from KWS on Wednesday.
