Mayor will lead the "Clean Up Mombasa 2006"

A community event which has been organized since 1997

Coastweek - - Environment Trust of Kenya a local NGO based in Mombasa and other implementing partners are organizing and co-ordinating 'Clean Up Mombasa 2006', a community event which has been organized since 1997.

Environment Trust Of Kenya Chairman Z. K. Nedru said the event is scheduled for 2nd December 2006.

The kick off of the 'Clean Up' will be in front of Mombasa Sports Club, along Mnazi Moja Road at 8.00 a.m. and H.W. the Mayor of Mombasa, Cllr. Ali. S. Shekue will be the Chief Guest to lead individuals, families, groups, the business community and anyone who can help pick up rubbish and be part of a special community event.

'Clean Up Mombasa' project of the Recycling and Anti-litter programme is linked to 'Clean Up the World' an event designated to focus international attention on the problems of rubbish and waste affecting the environment and the role that individuals can play to improve it.

The event also aims to create international media focus for 'clean up' activities thereby raising awareness of government, industries and communities about local environmental issues, particularly waste minimization, recycling and waste management.

'Clean Ups' also show people care about their community environment and are willing to share responsibility for cleaning up and disposing of garbage in a responsible manner.

Mr Nderu went on: "Participating in 'Clean Up Mombasa 2006' will demonstrate that people are for the health of their environment, whenever they may live.

"It is an opportunity to make a difference. Become a role model in the community by cleaning up the environment.

"You can help 'Clean up Mombasa' and enjoy a cleaner, healthier environment.

"Do not miss !"

I have been diving in some places in the world during such clean up activities and participating dive centers offered free diving gear and nets for everyone who was prepared to join in and collect waste in the sea.
