The World Travel Market Responsible Tourism Awards are the largest of their kind in the world.
The central tenet of the Awards is that all types of tourism can and should be operated in a way that respects and benefits destinations and local people.
The Awards are different from other tourism Awards in that, winners are nominated by tourists.
In 2006 there were 1200 nominations from readers of The Times of London and National Geographical Magazine and via online specialist ResponsibleTravel.Com.
Nominees under consideration were then put forward to a panel of 13 expert judges who reviewed the detailed responsible tourism questionnaires and took up references.

Overall Joint Winner: Ol Malo Lodge and Trust, Kenya
This eco-lodge and charitable trust is situated in Northern Kenya.
Their key achievement to date is the establishment of The Ol Malo Eye Project which focuses upon the eradication of Trachoma - a cause of painful blindness. This is an infectious and preventable disease.
Best Small Hotel (fewer than 50 rooms):
Winner: Il N'gwesi Community Lodge, Kenya. Run and managed by the Ilaikipiak Maasai Il N'gwesi community. The success of Il N'gwesi has served as a model for other communities in Northern Kenya
Person who has made the greatest contribution to responsible tourism:
Highly commended: Ian Craig of Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and Jake Grieves-Cook, Chairman of the Kenya Tourist Board, both of whom have made a significant contribution to responsible tourism in Kenya.
