The Upper Hill Nairobi Country Lodge

At only US$ 60 a night inclusive of a hot breakfast and 28% taxes, what can you expect in Nairobi? Sadly, not much. For this reason we (bushdrums.com) decided to add this hotel to our portfolio. Although it doesn´t exactly comply with our code of ethics, it is not conducted against our ethics either, and since we all need a place to stay on touch-down in Nairobi, we decided to share this information on the new hotel with you.

Travelling internationally, such a budget will buy you good clean accommodation without any compromise on security, noise, connectivity and general comfort. Thankfully for the consumer, a new Nairobi Hotel has now decided to change this. The Country Lodge opened November 1, for weeks ahead of schedule. The Country Lodge concept is new to Nairobi, but well established in the USA, Europe and South Africa - it is a hotel without restaurants, targeting the business traveller who wants a clean, quiet and safe place to sleep, a good Wi-Fi connection and a hot breakfast. He / She does not want to spend too much and is prepared to compromise on amenities, but will never concede quality, comfort, connectivity and security. He/She will spend much of the day in an office in Nairobi and then dine out in one of Nairobi´s great Restaurants that you will find in our Restaurant Guide.

SPACIOUS, CLEAN AND COMFORTABLE ROOMS

Country Lodge offers everything the business traveller might need. Its location, in Upper Hill, is far from busy streets and pounding noise. Each well designed en suite single room has a spacious four-foot wide bed, Swedish duvet, and sound proofing on all doors and windows, which have been imported from Europe. To ensure maximum comfort, all rooms have a fan and mosquito proofing on the windows (including the bathroom window). A very large desk with inbuilt Euro, US and Kenyan sockets, state of the art telephone system (the latest IP model), 1 MB wi-fi in all rooms (and public areas), electronic safe, and excellent lighting, allow guests to work in their rooms. Each room is also equipped with satellite TV and tea and coffee facilities. The bathroom is a unique design offering a large shower and granite vanity unit around the basin. Country Lodge also has a small number of double and family rooms for those on business travel with family.

Unlike its competition in the $60 segment, the hotel has two stand-by 300kva generators. The generator capacity ensures, contrary to some competition in the 5-star market, that all lights and essential services will stay on during power cuts. Country Lodge also offers a huge and reliable water supply backed up by a borehole.

WHO IS BEHIND COUNTRY LODGE?

Country Lodge is owned and managed by Fairview Hotel Ltd, the only 4-star family run hotel in Nairobi. The Fairview management, recognising that the $60 segment was not catered for, decided to do something about it. Having operated the Fairview since 1946 at occupancy levels averaging over 90%, the Fairview management team made a supreme effort to redefine the customer experience in the $60 segment.

The management’s approach to the design of Country Lodge was innovative. They travelled to 20 hotels around the world and with their combined experience of three generations they produced a design which is very close to what you see today. Clearly, the Fairview management has a very good understanding of their customers’ requirements.

FULL BREAKFAST INCLUDED AND GREAT OPTIONS FOR DINNER

The business traveller needs a good breakfast – not mushy eggs from a buffet – and a steaming cup of freshly brewed coffee or tea. This is what Country Lodge provides – all included in the room rate. For other meals, Country Lodge recommends one of the award winning five restaurants at the Fairview Hotel, just a short walk away, and even provides a shuttle bus at night for the safety and comfort of diners. A small room service menu is also available between 6.00 pm and 11.00 pm, and an evening bar caters for predinner drinks and nightcaps. At other times the vending machines can supply 24-hour light refreshments.

MINIMALIST DÉCOR FOR MAXIMUM WELLBEING

Décor is minimalist and modern with a stunning black and white entrance, stainless steel railing, and beech laminate flooring in the rooms. The double volume light and airy reception is a study of efficiency with systems designed to prevent check-in/out delays. It’s chic, functional and very economical and it’s the first of its kind in Nairobi.

Directions to Country Lodge
From the Main Uhuru Highway, take Haille Selassie Avenue into Upper Hill. Opposite Nairobi Club follow the road that allows you to do a 180 degree turn onto Ngong Road. Drive for 100 metres down Ngong Road and take a left on Second Ngong Avenue. Country Lodge is 150 meters on your right.
