an earthwatch report has revealed that a change in climate could mean the difference between survival and extinction for the endangered milne-edwards sifaka.
the 20-year field study showed that even subtle changes in climate effect reproductive success.
older female sifakas reproduce easily enough, but their infants only survive if there is sufficient rain during the lactation period. to produce milk the sifaka relies on large quantities of water and nutrients, which it draws from its leaf food. in drier years, older femals with worn teeth are unable to chew enough leaves to produce sufficient quantities of milk, leading to higher infant mortality.
the study also predicted a decline in greater bamboo lemur, whose survival depends on bamboo plants found near rivers.
