The Government will hire 5,000 medical personnel to address the current shortage, Health minister, Mrs Charity Ngilu, has announced.

She said most of the workers would be posted to health centres in rural areas.

"Many people leave the rural areas to seek treatment in towns, therefore overwhelming urban health facilities. We want to change this," said Ngilu.

Speaking on Monday in Bungoma when she visited six health centres, the minister said the Government had allocated Sh1 billion to improve rural health institutions.

Ngilu directed individuals irregularly allocated 14 acres of land belonging to the Bungoma District Hospital to vacate. The minister said a medical training college would be constructed on the land.

She said a Sh2.9 million maternity ward would be built at the Bumula Health Centre.
