News from Sheldrick Wildlife Trust this morning:

Thanks Jan so much for your continued support, we are so deeply grateful. Just last week our Mara Veterinary Unit was called to Amboseli (Dr. Ndeereh was attending a funeral of a close relative) as a poor family group had been set upon by hundreds of Morans - all with terrible spear wounds - they had scattered and weren't seen for weeks, but two were able to be found and treated and they will I am sure make a full recovery as a result
.

It takes nature millions of years to evolve a new species. It takes only minutes to eradicate one from the wild forever.

A little further information this afternoon. Apparently an elephant killed a 17 year old human female 5 km from Amboseli and prior to that a 12 year old female was injured. This got the moran so riled up that in large numbers they retaliated by spearing the elephants. Very sad to hear on all scores.

It seems it is a vicious cycle. The elephants get hurt, they distrust all humans, they retaliate against the humans, etc. When will it ever stop? Now the elephants will be even more distrustful of humans and more people will get hurt in the future.

It takes nature millions of years to evolve a new species. It takes only minutes to eradicate one from the wild forever.
