Juma's monkey project
Ramadhani Juma, a resident of Arusha has an interesting monkey business. He is making monkey toys by using waste plastic bags that are lying around the municipality. The aim of the product is to make the environment clean and safe by collecting used plastic bags. "I then wash them with clean water and disinfectant to kill the bacteria, then I dry them in the sun," said Juma who sees a good future in his project.
He decided to establish the project after seeing how plastic bags are destroying Arusha's environment because they never decay. If you burn them you cause big air pollution, he said. He started the project in 2002, since then he has made about 250 monkey toys.
Despite the honourable cause, Juma is facing some hitches. "The main problems which I am facing right now is with the marketing and knowing where to sell the products," he remarked. His capital is so small that he can not afford to make many toys. When he sells one toy he goes to the market to buy a kitenge material to make another one.
Juma says if he had a good market and enough capital he could make many monkey toys and make some sales outside of the country, and at the same time make the environment clean and tidy.
His business expansion includes making other designs such as giraffes, lions and zebras.
