You bet is does! So many more eyes and ears seeing and hearing what is going on can only help keep the poachers away from areas, and the tourists can notify the wildlife authorities when and if they see someone acting suspiciously As bad as some areas have been recently with poaching (Amboseli), just imagine if there had been no tourists in the area - the wildlife would have been wiped out entirely long ago.

I know for a fact that some of our Bushdrummers go after poachers, bushmeat people and charcoalers on their own. One of them made a citizen's arrest of a charcoaler a few months ago and turned him over to the wildlife authorities.

Tourism can also have a very negative effect. I don't know how many times I've asked a driver to stop so I could get out of the vehicle to pick up plastic water bottles, plastic bags, cigarette butts, etc. tourists have dropped or thrown from vehicles not even considering that some young animal might eat it, get sick and/or die. Some people just don't care about the environment or wildlife they are watching.

It takes nature millions of years to evolve a new species. It takes only minutes to eradicate one from the wild forever.
