Cynthia Moss Terrible fire raging in Amboseli. We've lost three tents with their roofs in the research camp. 300 people trying to put it out.

Cynthia Moss The fire is under control and nearly out now. The saddest thing is all the big clumps of palms trees that have been destroyed. We can always replace the tents.

Cynthia Moss Fire damage being assessed this morning. It could have been so much worse. No one was hurt, no equipment or data destroyed. The loss of the Phoenix palms is what is bothering me.

It takes nature millions of years to evolve a new species. It takes only minutes to eradicate one from the wild forever.

If any of you have seen where she has her camp - you will know the palms were wonderful.
Unfortunately they create dry leaves that when left to fall and rot become very dry and all is needed is a spark and they all go alight.
However with all things of nature - you cannot have someone picking dried leaves in the bush....
Pity but I am sure they shall revive in the years to come (I hope) - with the help of the rain....
Good that nobody was injured!
