3 Rhino Poachers Killed and 4 Rhino Horns Recovered in Lamu

Kenya Wildlife Service rangers yesterday killed three heavily armed rhino poachers after a fierce fire exchange in Roja Rangi area of Lamu District, in an intensive security operation that has lasted six days.

The three poachers who formed part of a five-man gang that had earlier in the week slaughtered two black rhinos and poached their four horns in Tsavo East National Park, were trying to escape into Somalia through Lamu, when a contingent of KWS rangers had contact with them killing three in the ensuing exchange.

KWS officers were able to recover the following items:

2 AK 47 assault rifles,
More than 200 rounds of Ammunition, and
The poached 4 black rhino horns
The fierce fire exchange between KWS rangers and the poachers, which occurred at 17.30 hrs (5.30pm local time); saw the two surviving poachers escape under the cover of darkness.

The operation is still ongoing and we believe the two will be arrested and charged before a court of law.

Here one can see at what HUGE scale poaching is!

KWS are doing a great job..........we need more of them!
Hope the catch those 2 and as many more as they can!

Hope that the court Speaks a Harsh Sentence!

The problem is that alternatives must be offered to the Locals living there!!!!
That there are other ways to earn money and how to live in Co-existance with Wildlife!!!!

Its no use Sentencing them if the situation doesn't change!!!!

The Black Rhino is almost Extinguist..........as sadly many more Beautiful Wildlife on the planet!

If I remember correctly, the main use of the rhino horn is to produce aphrodisiaca on the asian market. How can these people still believe in this?? Maybe some education on that side would destroy the market for it?

Thats the main Problem!.......And ofcourse......money!

The fortune that is earned on that Market..............this has to stop!

As long as that "believe" exists, that's how long it will take!

But you must close the tap...........Rhinos, Tigers,.......etc...........just for that?

Then they will have to think of alternatives.......like roots?

Rhino horns are also used as a sign of wealth and richness in the middle East.
A dagger with the handle of a Rhino horn....

This goes for an incredible amount of money.

Perhaps the far east market still have not been introduced to VIAGRA!

Does anybody know if any efforts have been made to educate those people?

I wish a rumor would spread that you could get BSE from consuming ground rhino horn or become impotent. Imagine how the market would drop!!
