Hi Kipper,

it is definately a frog-fish but I can not tell you exactly which one. There are endless types of frog-fishes. Would need to know more about it. Where it was found, size etc.

It could be a "Painted Frogfish" (Antennarius pictus), but that is just a lucky guess.

I have never seen this specific type but they are amazing creatures. They walk rather than swim and have an antenna on their forhead which they use to attract bait. Most species are very well camoflaged and only the moving antenna can be seen. Small fish think it is a small creature and go to check it out. When close enough he then opens his huge mouth extremely quickly and sucks in everything in the proximity including the little fish.

A distant relative of this family, the anglerfish even use bioluminescence on this antenna to attract fish in the dark of the depth. Those are some of the most ugly fish you can probably find. You might have seen one in "Finding Nemo".

Try http://www.starfish.ch/frogfish/index.html which has all the details you need to identify it more accurately.

Thanks Carsten, this world of ours never ceases to amaze me! Just wish we could look after it better.

absolutely right, kipper. Our planet is full of such amazing creatures. Especially concerning the oceans we have only discovered the tip of the ice-berg and are already stunned by it´s variety.

Yet we continue to dispose our rubbish in it and happily pull out anything edible disregarding the damage we do to what we leave behind

We must enjoy it whilst it is there and continue to try and protect it !
