I think he died from the bite of a spider, no?
no, no, not nice to make such jokes. Poor man doesn't deserve it. He was a fantastic man and deserves to rest in peace.

maybe it was an eastafrican red-back (like nico described) despite the redback which has that australian-exclusive label

People think that Africa is the most dangerous place for animals and poisonous creepy crawleys - If I can re call I think I heard on National Geographic that the 10 most venumous "things" actually are in Australia?
Anyone confirm?

nico you are perfectly right!
australia has the most bizarr and venomous creatures!
even the australians say that "11 out of 10 animals are dangerous" in australia
- taipan most venomous snake in the world. one bite has the potential to kill more than 20 humans!
- jellyfish - jan to may in the coral sea/east coast queensland. extremly dangerous.tentacles are more than 20 metres and dies of blood circulation shock
- redback spider - very small but really bad one. lives preferably under the toilet seats !
the rainforest in australia also has plants which are really nasty: when you touch a certain leaf it releases a kind of hair which sting under the skin for months. and it hearts like hell!
there are interesting books available about australian nasty creatures and plants!
Heaps of creapy creatures in Australia, can only confirm that.
Another one that comes to my mind is an octopus. It is the smallest type in the world, only 20 cm in size. If you happen to catch one and hold it in your hand, it might bite you and send you straight to hospital
Another one for Pippa: The funnel spider. Lives in parks and gardens in little bushes and builds a net in the shape of a funnel. This little b**** is very hostile and defends its territory even against humans having a picnic in front of the bush. Many people suffer their bites every year.

carsten, this little octopus is it that one which has got blue circles when it's relaxed? it's beautiful but quite a beast....lives in the whole of south pacific. so when diving: never ever touch anything! otherwise it might become very painful to say the least!
