Nobel peace laureate, Prof Wangari Maathai, will tomorrow lead about 150 volunteers from Japan to plant trees.

The Environment Foundation volunteers will plant 3,000 indigenous trees at Sabatia Forest in Eldama Ravine. The forest has suffered massive logging that has left it bare.

The event is the foundation’s appreciation of the Tetu MP’s enthusiasm to conserve the environment.

It comes barely two weeks after Maathai launched an initiative to plant a billion trees globally by the end of next year, during the United Nations conference on climate change in Nairobi.

She pledged to plant one million trees through her Greenbelt Movement.

The campaign, a partnership with the United Nations Environmental Programme, is part of her efforts to tackle global warming.
