Thanks much. I had seen that one earlier this morning and posted it under news.
I have seen similar behavior in Tsavo - not skimming the water as these elephants were doing but the elephants swishing the water first with their trunks before drinking. I've also seen Amboseli elephants grabbing a bunch of swamp grass and "washing" it first by dunking it several times or sometimes slapping the bunch of grass against their body to detach any mud attached. Smart animals.
One of the most heartwarming stories I heard several weeks ago in Kenya was from a friend who used to own a lodge at Lake Jipe. He saw an elephant who's trunk had been severed by a snare. Naturally this guy couldn't eat or drink. Two other bulls stayed with this guy for eight months feeding him with their trunks and giving him water. Eventually his wounds healed but he had to relearn how to use the remaining trunk (which had no "fingers" at the end). Once he had relearned how to use his shortened trunk, his two friends disappeared. Amazing true story.
