Kenya: Involve Us in Tourism, Say Kenyans

Most Kenyans are of the view that they are not benefiting from the wildlife and tourism sector.

Similarly, more feel that they should be directly involved in the sector for them to feel that they own the wildlife.

The views were presented in Nakuru during a wildlife conservation and management policy and legislation workshop. The team receiving the views was headed by the national steering committee chairman Brigadier (Rtd) William Kamunge.

The residents further suggested the scrapping of the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to be replaced by a private body to manage and conserve wildlife.

Brigadier Kamunge said the suggestions being received across the country would help review policy, the Wildlife Management Act and Sessional Paper which would later be presented to the Minister for Tourism and Wildlife.

Yesterday the committee received views from communities residing around the Lake Nakuru National Park, individuals and other stakeholders in the tourism and wildlife sector from Baringo, Kericho, Naivasha and Nakuru.

Brigadier Kamunge said the wildlife and tourism sectors were being managed using a 1975 sessional paper and the Wildlife Act which was last amended in 1989.

He said emerging issues had made it critical to review the wildlife policy to realign it with current global trends.

He said some of the issues touch on the loss of biodiversity, habitat and fragmentation of land, human wildlife conflicts and competing land uses.
