Just heard from Kat who was in Tsavo East yesterday. She stated:
Witnessed a remarkable drama yesterday at Aruba Dam.
3 Lions had separated a very young waterbuck from its mother and were going for the kill.
A herd of several elephants were at the dam drinking and sized up the situation...they put themselves between the lions and the waterbuck and shielding it...brought it back to its mother who was several hundred yards away. Even the driver, Joseph, who has been doing safari work for decades was stunned.
Very dry but not many eles at the waterhole....very perplexing - and not many in the park on game drives either. Maybe they are somewhere where there is both water and grass?
Hundreds of cape buffalo came to drink every day and last night they came past Kocha tent at 10pm until midnight. They sounded like a couple of hundred old men grunting and snoring! What a racket.
Kat's note again shows how remarkably intelligent and caring elephants can be as well as the
fact that they can reason out what is going on with others and care enough about other species
to help them.
