Elephant census commences in Tsavo (Kenya)

An international team has gathered in Kenya this week, to conduct a census of elephants in the Tsavo-Mkomazi conservation area. Drought and poaching are putting pressure on the large animals, it remains to be seen whether the population is expanding or contracting.

Droughts kill off the young, old, weak, ill, disabled.....survival of the fittest.

The hundreds of elephants poached between Tsavo, Amboseli, Mkomazi on the other hand, are the biggest and fittest, mostly bull elephants with large tusks - the ones who can contribute the most to the gene pool.

Although droughts are terrible events but poaching is steadily weakening the herds and leaving the least desirable ones to procreate.

As conservationists are telling us in their news updates from this 3 parks: the biggest bulls are being carefully selected for assassination by well-financed, well-armed poaching gangs.
