Activists want Mara ban lifted

The Government has been urged to lift the ban on putting up of new tourist facilities within the Maasai Mara.

A group of conservationists based in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve said with the facility having been declared among the Seventh Wonders of the World, there was urgent need to expand its capacity to cope with the influx of tourists in the next peak season set to start from July to October.

The reserve got its fame in November last year based on the annual migration of more than one million wildebeests, half a million gazelles, and 200,000 zebras from Serengeti National Park in Tanzania into the Mara in search of fresh pastures and water. Soon after the declaration of the game reserve as a wonder of the world, the Minister for Tourism Mr Morris Dzoro slapped a ban on construction of new hotels and lodges to preserve the ecosystem.

Led by the chairman of Siana Wildlife Conservation Trust, Mr Sammy Nkoitoi, the agencies also called for relocation of facilities put up along the wildlife dispersal and migratory corridors to ensure the facility retains its prestige and curb human-wildlife conflicts.
