Unfortunately not everywhere in Australia, Nico. The article refers to the fact that this alternative method of protecting swimmers from shark attacks had been used in parts of Australia for more than 40 years!!!

What makes me furious is that in Australia every year 1-10 people die from shark attacks, hence they try to kill them wherever they can. On the other hand, millions and millions of sharks are killed by humans every year, but no-one is able to stop this!!

have a look for dr. erich ritter. he is a scientist on shark behavior!
excellent books!
and i thought that since ron and valerie taylor (australien which did years of research in SA and OZ) have proved beyond any doubt that sharks are just not these man eating beasts attitude towards sharks has changed!

Those interested in sharks know it since a long time, but "Joe Average" still only reads the news of people being killed by sharks and concludes from this that sharks are killer-beasts. Besides this, I highly criticise movies that base on this wrong picture. I criticise them because many people do not realize that these films are fictional and hence they do not feel bad about sharks being killed for any reason. They just think "Ah great, one beast less ! "
The other thing that people don't want to understand is the significance of the existance of sharks in the ecosystem. So what, if sharks do not exist any longer?

Sharks play an extremely important role in the stabilization of the whole ecosystem. By feeding on weak and ill fish, they keep the spreading of diseases under control.
Sharks feed on large predators, so they actually protect tuna and other fish that we eat.

The whole ecosystem "ocean" is doomed to collapse without sharks and if we consider the significance of the ocean for our planet, you can conclude that the whole planet is doomed if nothing changes veeeeery soon !!!

absolutely right and the more dangerous an animal looks the more difficult it is to make people understand.

From your stats - you will find that those who are killed every year by sharks are either divers looking for sharks, feeding or playing with them for extreme sports or Surfers who will be going behind nets and barriers anyway.
You will find hardly any bathers who get killed by accident by sharks.
Away with nets -
