canned hunting in south africa

Link to this post 24 Nov 06

the newly introduced legislation which was meant to ban "canned hunting" is not worthwhile the paper where it's written on !

canned hunting:
a practise special to south africa:
lions are bred in small "game parks" for the only purpose to be killed as soon as a financially potential "hunter" appears on the scene! these lions are put into small enclosures to make sure the "hunter" gets his/her trophy! because the mane is very precious to the "hunters" they shot only in to the stomack in order to not "harm" the mane. because of the mane-focussed trophy hunting most of the time the femal surplus gets killed immediately after birth. the lion which is "due" to be hunted is taken away from the "pride" and mostly will be killed in front of the eyes of the pride members!

but the new legislation is loughable because it leaves many slots open for the powerful hunting industry in south africa to serve their international clientele. the majority comes from europe and america.
as we cannot reach each and every hunter - besides nobody can change their attitude because they are just week egos which need such kind of "confirmation" for their self-esteem - something must be done in order to get rid of the valid legislation.

in order to oppose please write your letter of disgust to the following individuals:

minister for environment and tourism: martin van scalkwyk - b.burnett@deat.gov.za
dr. pieter botha - largepredator@deat.gov.za
j.p. louw - louwjp@iafrica.com

with copy to:

chrisandbev@mweb.co.za
marlei@interat.co.za

it's essential that you sent chris and bev as well as marlei a copy because chris will meet with the minister in january 07 and furthermore hopes to get a tv-confrontation with the minister. in order not to deny the receipt of your letters chris should have a copy to present these.

dear friends, i hope you sent your letter of outcry to the individuals involved to get them aware that a lot of people outside SA is carefully watching what's going on in SA with this particular topic!

Pippa:

This is truly disappointing. I have just written Dr. Botha.

I was surprised when I read the article about Frida seeing that Vier Pfoten was involved in this sort of disgusting practice. I know Vier Pfoten has been instrumental in monetarily helping in hiring the veterinarian (from KWS and assigned to the Sheldrick Trust). I have seen the work he has done in both Amboseli and Tsavo (being with him while he darted and treated speared elephants) and always felt that Vier Pfoten had their heart in the right place as far as wildlife was concerned. In fact I have in the past written to them thanking them for their support with the veterinarian in Kenya.

However, I shall now send off a note to them telling them of my disappointment in hearing that they were instrumental in seeing that the Romanian lion cub was sent to South Africa to breed for the canned lion industry.
