Kenya Drought Taking Its Toll

Just another picture (taken during my visit in Amboseli just a few weeks ago) that illustrates the conditions for wildlife in Kenya... This elephant baby (pic no.18) was crawling forward on its knees for several hundred metres to be able to feed on the smallest blade of grass...

Tobi: Thanks so much for posting your great pictures.

Sadly that poor baby elephant probably will not live out the year. Most of the 2008 and 2009 baby elephants have already died inside the park. Not enough nutricious food for the mothers - thus not enough milk supply for the baby. So very sad.

Can they not drill wells? I know it costs money but I was wondering about the underground water in kenya. I know when i have visited africa there are few places with bore holes they call it.

There are boreholes in Tsavo... Hwange NP in Zimbabwe is said to have many boreholes which sometimes remain the only source of water in the dry season. The problem there now is that there's not enough money to keep them running...
The problem remains like Jan said that there's not enough nutricious food for the animals. If anybody gets to know anything about rain in Kenya (Samburu was even worse!) which hopefully won't fail in Oct / Nov, please let me know!!!

Tobi: The Kisimu/Kericho area was flooded with rain the end of last week. Other than that, Samburu just got a few drops (see Ewasolions.org blog on www.wildlifedirect.org.
So far, I haven't heard of any other areas getting rain.

Unfortunately bore holes play a very minimum part of helping to keep wildlife alive. We only see the large animals suffering - the so called big 5 with some others however the drought is having a drastic effect on all animal kingdom - reptiles, birds etc
Rain is needed where it drops every year - every season for centuries.......

Tobi took some great photos (thank you for the link and sharing them with us). I went home to see how Kili looked 40 years ago when mum and dad lived in Arusha - there was a lot more snow; crazy and very sad how much it has changed.....
